Discover Shkoder — Ancient Capital of the North
A full-day journey from Tirana to Albania's most historically rich northern city. Shkoder is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the Balkans, a vibrant cultural hub where Illyrian, Roman, Venetian, and Ottoman layers of history meet at every corner.
On the way north, we stop in Lezha to visit the tomb of Gjergj Kastrioti — Skanderbeg, Albania's greatest national hero. Taken hostage by the Ottoman sultan and trained at their court, Skanderbeg turned against the Ottomans in 1443 and unified the Albanian principalities, leading a legendary 25-year resistance.
In Shkoder we explore the magnificent Rozafa Castle, rising 130 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Buna and Drin rivers. Originally Illyrian, rebuilt by the Venetians, it commands sweeping views over Lake Skadar and the Albanian Alps. Afterwards we stroll the beautiful Shkodra Promenade — 800 metres of cobblestone elegance.
